ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Sant’Eufemia is the church of the flight — raised by Patriarch Elias in 579 for a congregation of refugees, and still the parish church of the town. Inside it is one tall, serene room: a mosaic floor of geometric waves and peacocks laid over the 4th-century “Petrus basilichetta” it replaced, a gilded paleo-Christian altarpiece, the statue of Our Lady of the Angels that sails across the lagoon every July in the Perdon di Barbana procession, and above the bell tower the weathervane archangel that watches over the whole lagoon. Entry is free, and in the cool of the morning you often have it to yourself.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The basilica was consecrated in 579 by Patriarch Elias, who had carried the patriarchal throne, the relics of the Aquileian martyrs Hermagoras and Fortunatus, and the treasure of the burned city across the water. It was built over a 5th-century hall (“Petrus basilichetta”) whose foundations lie beneath the floor. For eight centuries it was the cathedral of a patriarchate that claimed primacy over the whole upper Adriatic; its looted treasury is now partly in Venice, but the floor, the walls and the angel survived every raid.
