ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Behind the coast, the spine of Korčula carries a chain of old inland towns built away from the sea against pirate raids. Blato, the largest, wraps a long road-and-park axis with a layered town history and its own Kumpanija sword dance; Smokvica and Čara are the Pošip heartland, their vineyards spread over the karst fields around them; Pupnat sits in a green fold of the hills with the island’s best-loved konoba nearby. The road between them — the island’s wine road — links cellars, stone lanes and the hilltop viewpoints over both coasts.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The inland towns were settled before the coastal ones: frequenting the exposed shore was dangerous in the pirate centuries, so the islanders built on the ridge roads and descended to work the coast. Blato grew into the island’s second town on wine and oil exporting; each village kept its own Kumpanija sword-dance brotherhood, performed on feast days — the inland counterpart of Korčula town’s Moreška. Pošip, now Croatia’s best-known white, was born near Smokvica and Čara in the 19th century.

WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
The interior is the island that tourism skipped — the wine road, the dances and the towns that gave Korčula its culture. For a visitor it is the drive that turns the island from a beach stop into a place.
