ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
The Cathedral of St Mark is the architectural anchor of Korčula old town: built in stages from the 14th to the 16th century, it blends Gothic structure with Renaissance detailing, crowned by a sculpted façade and a tower that doubles as the town’s landmark. It faces the main square alongside the Venetian-era Gabrielis Palace — now the town museum — so a single stop covers the cathedral, the museum collections and the square life of the town. Inside are the carved stone details, the altar paintings and the island’s ecclesiastical treasures.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The cathedral was built on the site of an earlier church as the town grew rich on shipbuilding and stone trade under Venetian rule. Local master builders worked on it over two centuries, giving it its hybrid Gothic-Renaissance character; the bell tower and the sculptural façade were completed in the 16th century. The adjacent Gabriellis Palace, home to one of Korčula’s most prominent families, became the town museum and holds the island’s archaeological and maritime collections.
