ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

San Giovanni (St John) Fortress is the keep at the summit of Kotor’s city walls, perched on the cliff above the old town at about 260 metres above the bay. It is the destination of the famous wall climb — a stairway of roughly 1,350 steps that switchbacks up the mountainside from behind the old town — and it gives the view that every visitor to Kotor hopes to bring back: the walled town laid out below, the bay winding away between the mountains, and the limestone peaks closing the horizon. The walls do not merely enclose the town; they continue up the cliff to the fortress, so the climb is a walk along the most ambitious single piece of fortification on the eastern Adriatic.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

The fortifications above Kotor were built up over centuries under Venetian rule, with the present system of walls and the fortress largely taking shape between the 14th and 17th centuries. The walls run for some 4.5 km, climbing from the river and the town gates up the cliff to San Giovanni and along the ridge, a defensive scheme designed to protect the town from attack both from the sea and from the heights above. The fortress itself was garrisoned and refortified under Austrian as well as Venetian rule. The whole system was damaged in the 1979 earthquake and has since been partly restored; together with the old town it forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing.

WHAT TO SEE

What to see here

01

The stairway itself — roughly 1,350 stone steps switchbacking up the cliff, passing the small Church of Our Lady of Remedy (Gospa od Zdravlja) about halfway up.

02

The fortress platform at the top — the reward of the climb, with the panoramic view over the old town, the bay and the mountains.

03

The run of walls along the ridge — the continuation of the ramparts above the fortress, showing the full scale of the Venetian defensive scheme.

04

Our Lady of Remedy church — a 15th-century chapel built into the wall halfway up, a resting point and a viewpoint in its own right.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

The fortress and the walls that climb to it are what set Kotor apart from every other walled town on the Adriatic. Most are enclosed on flat ground; Kotor’s walls run straight up a cliff, so the town and its fortifications form a single vertical structure. For a visitor, the climb is the single most memorable thing to do in Kotor — not only for the view at the top but for the experience of walking a wall that was built to climb a mountain.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Before you go

Access
The wall climb is reached from behind the old town (near the River Gate). An entry fee is charged for the maintained section of the walls; tickets are bought at the base.
Climb
The ascent is roughly 1,350 steps and takes 40 to 90 minutes each way depending on pace. The stone is worn and can be slippery; shoes with grip are essential. There are handrails in places but the route is steep and exposed in sections — not suitable in midday summer heat or for anyone uncomfortable with heights.
Best Time
Start early in the morning, before the heat and the cruise-ship crowds. The light is best at the top in the first hours after sunrise and again in the late afternoon.
Water
Carry water, especially in summer — there is no reliable supply on the route.
Context
The walls and fortress are part of the UNESCO-listed Natural and Culturo-Historical Region of Kotor.
