ABOUT THE DESTINATION

Llogara is the pass and national park where the Riviera’s mountain barrier is crossed: the SH8 climbs from the Bay of Vlorë through old pine and fir forest to a 1,027 m saddle, then descends in celebrated hairpins to the coast at Palasë and Dhërmi. From the pass, the whole southern Riviera reads at a glance — the Ceraunian ridge, the curves of the Ionian coast, Corfu on the horizon on clear days. A visitor centre, walking trails, paragliding and the mountain hotel make the pass a destination in itself, not just a road stop.

HISTORY & CULTURE

The Story Behind the Place

Llogara’s story is the story of crossing this coast. The saddle has carried the route between the Bay of Vlorë and the Ionian shore since antiquity; in 48 BC Julius Caesar marched three legions over it in pursuit of Pompey, recording the march in his own Commentaries — the crossing still named Caesar’s Pass on the park’s maps. Ottoman and modern roads followed the same line, and the twentieth-century SH8 turned the climb into one of Europe’s celebrated drives. The forests that dress the pass were protected as a national park in 1966 — around a thousand hectares of black pine, Bulgarian fir and boxwood on the Ceraunian ridge — and after the 1990s the pass opened to the paragliding, hiking and road-trip traffic that makes it the Riviera’s mountain gate today.

Practical Information

Getting There

Llogara is about 40 km south of Vlorë on the SH8 — under an hour by car, reached by any Riviera bus or furgon that climbs the pass (most Vlorë–Himarë–Sarandë services stop on request). Own car or motorbike is the practical way to combine the pass with the Palasë beach and the coast beyond; the visitor centre is at the saddle.

What to Wear & Bring

A windproof layer even in summer — the saddle is cool and exposed at 1,027 m. Sturdy shoes for the trails, water from the pass, and fuel before the climb (no petrol on the pass road). Cash for the mountain hotel, trail parking and Palasë beach bars.

Accessibility & Mobility

The viewing platform at the saddle is reached by car with level access — the pass panorama is fully accessible. The forest trails and the ridge are walking routes on mountain ground; paragliding tandems require boarding on open slope and are not step-free.
