ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Veli Lošinj sits in a deep, sheltered bay where Austrian aristocrats built their winter villas among imported palms and camellias. The village church keeps a 15th-century Venetian painting; the promenade walks to the fishing harbour and out along the wild south coast, and the village’s cafés face the quietest water in the archipelago.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
Veli Lošinj is actually older than Mali — the medieval port of the island before the newer town outgrew it. Its spa fame began when the Austrian court doctor prescribed Lošinj’s microclimate in 1892; the villa quarter that followed brought electric light, a botanical park of imported subtropical species and a season of European high society that made the “healing island” famous from Vienna to Trieste.
