ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
The hill city is the region’s most evocative ruin: the fortress walls crown the volcanic hill, the church foundations sit inside, and the terraces below keep the Saxon miners’ quarter — the whole medieval economy of a silver city readable in one walk. The views run to the Kosovo field and the Šar mountains.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The Saxons settled and mined from the 13th century; the Serbian kings walled the city (Milutin’s era onward) and the 14th–15th centuries made it Europe’s silver benchmark (“argenti de Novo Monte”). The Ottoman capture (1455) ended its glory; the ruins kept the walls, the churches and the shafts — excavated and presented in recent decades.
