ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Opatija’s waterfront is lined with the villas and grand hotels of the Habsburg era — pastel façades, iron balconies, palm gardens and the names of the Austrian and Hungarian aristocracy who wintered here. Walking the waterfront between the Lungomare and the parks is a lesson in 19th-century resort architecture, still largely intact and still in use as hotels, restaurants and private houses.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
From the 1880s to the First World War, Opatija was the winter resort of the Austro-Hungarian elite, and the villas and hotels were built in the historicist and Secession styles of the period. Many survive with their original names and gardens, and the waterfront retains the character of a Central European spa town on the Mediterranean — a combination unique on the Croatian coast.
WHAT TO SEE
What to see here
The grand hotels along the waterfront, still operating under their historic names.
The private villas with their palm gardens and ironwork balconies.
The Maiden with the Seagull statue, the modern symbol of Opatija on the rocks.
The open-air concert shell and the seaside terraces.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
The villas are what make Opatija look and feel different from every other Croatian resort — a Habsburg spa town rather than a Mediterranean harbour town. For a visitor they are the architecture of the Lungomare walk.
