ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
The Lungomare is Opatija’s signature — a 12-kilometre seaside promenade running from the harbour village of Volosko through Opatija to Lovran, laid out in the Habsburg era so that the aristocracy could walk the coast in the shade of the pines. It passes grand villas, botanical parks, rocky bathing platforms and café terraces, and it is still the best walk on the Kvarner coast: flat, shaded and full of the architecture that made Opatija the Austrian Riviera.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The promenade was built in stages from the 1880s under the Austro-Hungarian administration, as Opatija grew from a modest village into a fashionable spa resort. It was named the Franz Joseph Promenade and designed for the slow, elegant walking that defined the resort’s social life. The villas and hotels along it date from the same period, and the path has been maintained as a continuous seaside walk ever since.
