ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

The Rugova gorge is the region’s great natural monument: the Bistrica cuts 25 km through the Prokletije’s limestone, the cliffs rising near-vertical on both sides, the “eye” springs bursting straight out of the rock after rain. The gorge road (Austro-Hungarian built) climbs through the villages to Kuqishtë and the mountain passes — the drive is the region’s best.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

The gorge’s road was cut in the Austro-Hungarian era (the WWI logistics); the villages of the Rugova highlands (the Albanian “Malësi” shepherds’ settlements) keep the mountain culture. The Via Dinarica and the Peaks of the Balkans trails run through — the gorge is the Prokletije’s gate.
