ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE

Mount Sv. Ilija rises straight from the channel to 961 metres — the roof of Pelješac and one of the great coastal ascents of southern Dalmatia. Several routes climb it: the popular two-hour path from the abandoned village of Gornja Nakovana, the direct and steeper track from Urkunici above Orebić, and the variant from Viganj that joins the Nakovana route high up. The mountain is bare limestone, the views are the reward: the whole channel with Korčula below, Hvar and the Vis line to the north, Pelješac’s length laid out east, and on clear days the coast of Montenegro closing the southern horizon.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Good to know before you go

Two to three hours up, about two down, on rocky unshaded karst. No water, no shade, no marked emergency points on the mountain — carry 2+ litres per person, sun protection and a wind layer; do not start in the afternoon heat of high summer. Long trousers are strongly advised for the viper habitat. Verify current trail marking locally before setting out.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

Sv. Ilija is the peninsula’s summit and its finest walk — the one climb that reads the whole of southern Dalmatia at a glance. For a visitor it is the serious outdoor day of a Pelješac stay.
