ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE
The Mali Ston oyster experience is short, perfect and entirely local: a visit to the bay’s farm racks — some farms take guests by boat across the oyster lines — and a tasting at the farm shed where the oysters are opened to order. The European flat oyster of this bay has been farmed since Roman times, its water is monitored as a protected growing area, and the taste — clean, mineral, faintly sweet from the karst springs — is why the bay’s name travels. With bread, a drop of lemon and a cold Pošip, it is the peninsula’s definitive meal.
WHAT YOU’LL EXPERIENCE
What you’ll experience
At the farm shed on the Mali Ston shore, or on a short boat ride to the racks themselves, you see the rope-and-rack growing system and hear the bay’s farming story from the families who run it. Then the tasting: oysters opened in front of you, typically with bread and local wine, mussels alongside in season. The whole visit runs an hour or two; the farm sheds sit steps from the bay’s water and the walls of Mali Ston above.
THE EXPERIENCE IN DETAIL
What it’s really like
An oyster farm visit and tasting on the Mali Ston bay — the Roman-era oyster beds of Pelješac, racks seen from the boat or shore, and the catch eaten raw at the farm edge.
HIGHLIGHTS

Oysters opened to order at the farm shed, seconds from the water.
The bay’s mineral-sweet taste from the karst springs.
The walls of Mali Ston and the tower above the tasting tables.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Good to know before you go
Farm visits run informally in season and the sheds serve walk-ins; boat-to-rack visits should be arranged ahead — verify current options locally, as no operators or prices are given here. The oysters are at their best in the \u201cr\u201d months; March’s oyster festival is the bay’s feast. Bring cash for the smaller sheds.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
This is food at its source — a two-thousand-year farming tradition eaten at the water it grows in. For a visitor it is the taste of Pelješac and one of the Adriatic’s defining meals.
