ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE
Viganj is where the Adriatic’s wind is most reliable: the summer maestral funnels through the Pelješac channel and doubles in strength against Korčula’s shore, blowing a steady afternoon breeze over the pebble beaches. The village has been a windsurfing centre since the 1980s — schools, rental centres and beach bars line the shore — and kitesurfing has grown alongside. Beginners learn in the calm mornings; the strong afternoon wind belongs to planing winds and short boards. Even non-riders come for the scene: the channel full of sails with Korčula across the water.
WHAT YOU’LL EXPERIENCE
What you’ll experience
A first lesson takes you onto the water in the morning light-wind window — board, rig and instructor on the shallow pebble bay. Experienced riders rig for the early afternoon as the maestral builds, riding across the channel’s chop and swells. Rental centres offer boards, wings and kites; several run multi-day courses. The beach strip at Viganj and Kučište holds cafés and surf clubs; Korčula town sits visibly across the channel.

Strong planing conditions from early afternoon.
The sail-filled channel scene with Korčula across the water.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Good to know before you go
Schools and rental operate in season — verify current operators, prices and requirements locally; none are given here. The morning is for learning, the afternoon for the strong wind; the maestral can build fast. The pebble beach needs water shoes at entry. Book peak-season courses ahead.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
Viganj is the reason the windsurfing world knows Pelješac — the best steady wind on the Croatian coast in a village built around it. For a visitor it is either the sport of the trip or its best spectator sport.
