ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
The Kaljaja hangs on the hill above the old town: the walls run from the river to the summit, and the climb (30 minutes through the lanes) ends at the town’s great panorama — the mosques and roofs of Prizren below, the Šar mountains beyond. The fortress is the town’s symbol and its best hour is the last one before dark.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The fortress’s roots are Byzantine (the lower town’s walls), rebuilt through the Serbian medieval and Ottoman eras; the summit keeps the older citadel. It guarded the Bistrica valley’s road and the town’s wealth; the 19th-century League era and the 20th century left it to the walkers.
