ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Lake Shkodra is the giant at the back door — 370–530 km² depending on the season, the largest in the Balkans, half of it Albanian. The Albanian shore is a quiet line of reeds, karst springs and the little town of Zogaj, where fish tavernas grill carp and mullet caught the same morning and kayaks slide out into the reed beds — home to pelicans and 270 recorded bird species. On winter days the lake fills from the Alps’ snow and the light comes down the Drin valley; in summer it is the town’s swimming pool and evening table.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The lake has fed Shkodra since the Illyrian settlement — its fish and its north–south trade connection toward the Adriatic via the Buna. The Ottoman-era fish trade made the shore villages wealthy; the Communist border with Yugoslavia militarised it, watchtowers still standing in the reeds at Zogaj. Since the 1990s the lake has been a shared transboundary park (Albania 1996, Montenegro 1983), and the old border road to Muriqan is now the quietest and prettiest cycle ride in northern Albania.
