ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Šibenik is ringed by fortresses, built over centuries to guard the town and the mouth of the Krka, and now restored as viewpoints and summer venues. St Michael’s fortress sits above the old town, Barone fortress above the eastern approach, and the seafront St Nicholas fortress guards the channel — and ascending any of them gives a different view of the town, the river and the islands. The fortresses are the second great sight of Šibenik after the cathedral.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
Šibenik was founded by Croats in the 11th century and grew into a Venetian naval base, and its fortresses were built and reinforced from the medieval period through the Venetian and Habsburg eras against the Ottomans and the water. St Michael’s is the oldest, above the old town; Barone was built after a 1647 Ottoman siege; and St Nicholas, at the mouth of the channel, was built by the Venetians in the 16th century. All have been restored in recent years as cultural venues and viewpoints.

WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
The fortresses are the viewpoint layer of Šibenik — the way to see the town, the river mouth and the islands from above — and the second half of a Šibenik visit after the cathedral. For a visitor they are the afternoon ascent and the evening venue.
