ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Marjan is the forested hill that rises above Split to the west, a protected park of pine forest, walking and cycling trails, viewpoints and old cliffside churches. It is the city’s green lung and the place to escape the heat and the crowds of the palace, with the best panorama over Split, the harbour and the islands from its viewpoints. A walk up Marjan is the natural afternoon of a Split day.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
Marjan was set aside as a public park in the 20th century, though its pine forest and its cliffside churches date back much further — the medieval churches of St Nicholas and St George sit on its slopes. The hill has been the city’s recreation ground for generations, and the trails, the benches and the viewpoints were developed to keep it as a green escape above the growing city. It is now a protected forest park.

WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
Marjan is the green counterpoint to the palace — the place that makes Split more than a Roman old town, with forest, viewpoints and bathing within a walk of the centre. For a visitor it is the afternoon escape and the best view of the city.
