ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Borja is the forested mountain that rises between the Velika and Mala Usora near Teslić, a massif of dense coniferous and deciduous forest whose name can be roughly translated as “pine woods,” from the white and black pine that cover its open spaces. Its highest peak is Runjavica (also called Velika Runjevica), at 1,077 metres, with Pavlov vrh, Komin and Kuke also rising above a thousand metres. Borja has been known since old times as an “air spa” for its mountain air, and it is rich in springs and streams — the best known is the Hajdučke vode spring, near the recreation area of the same name. For a visitor it is the mountain layer of a Teslić trip: a place to walk in pine forest, find a spring and reach a view, with the Hajdučke vode area as the developed base on its slopes.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
Borja is an old mountain in the human sense as well as the geological one: a coal mine was opened on it under Austro-Hungarian rule in 1916 and worked into the 1950s, when it was closed. The biggest part of the mountain lies today in the municipalities of Teslić and Kotor Varoš, so it does not belong to Teslić alone. On the peaks of the Očauš–Borja–Uzlomac chain runs the watershed between the basins of the Bosna and the Vrbas, and the mountain’s forests have long made it a recreation ground for the surrounding towns.
WHAT TO SEE
What to see here
Runjavica (Velika Runjevica) — the highest peak of Borja at 1,077 metres, reached on foot for a view over the wooded massif and the Usora valleys.
The pine forest and springs — the white and black pine woods that give the mountain its name, threaded by springs and streams, including the well-known Hajdučke vode spring.
The Solila saddle and views — the plateau and saddle through which the main road passes, a practical access point and a viewpoint toward Runjavica.
The Hajdučke vode area — the recreation area and spring on the slopes of Borja, the developed base for a mountain day (treated as its own attraction below).
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
Borja is the mountain that shelters Teslić and gives the town its forested backdrop and its clean air. For a visitor it is the nature layer of a Teslić stay — the pine woods, springs and walking country that balance the spa and the town.
