ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
The Stone Gate and the cathedral are the two landmarks that anchor the Upper Town. The Stone Gate is the only surviving gate of medieval Gradec, now a chapel holding a painting of the Virgin that survived a fire in the 18th century and is still a place of prayer and votive candles. A short walk away on Kaptol stands the cathedral of the Assumption, its twin neo-Gothic spires the tallest in Croatia, rebuilt after an earthquake and still the heart of the bishop’s town.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The Stone Gate was one of the gates of Gradec’s medieval walls; the painting of the Virgin inside is said to have survived the great fire of 1731, which made the gate a shrine that draws worshippers to this day. The cathedral was founded in the 11th century on Kaptol and rebuilt repeatedly — the present neo-Gothic façade and twin spires were added in the 19th century after an earthquake toppled the old tower, and the building has been restored again after the 2020 earthquake.

WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
The gate and the cathedral are the spiritual landmarks of the Upper Town — the shrine and the bishop’s church that gave Kaptol its name — and the two sights that complete the medieval walk. For a visitor they are the quiet, devotional counterpoint to St Mark’s Square.
