ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
The Upper Town is the oldest part of Zagreb, the two medieval hills of Gradec and Kaptol that grew together to form the city. Gradec was the craftsmen’s town, Kaptol the bishop’s town, and between them run the lanes, the Stone Gate and the funicular that link the upper and lower town. It is the quiet, historic heart of the capital — spires, tiled roofs and cobblestones rather than the Habsburg grid below.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
Zagreb began as two separate medieval settlements — Gradec, granted a royal charter in 1242, and Kaptol, the cathedral town under the bishop. The two were rivals for centuries before they were joined in the 19th century as Croatia’s capital under the Habsburgs. The Stone Gate, one of the old gates of Gradec, survives with a shrine to the Virgin that is still a place of prayer, and the funicular that links the hills to the lower town has run since 1893.
