ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
The AVNOJ Museum in Bihać stands on the site where, in November 1942, the first session of AVNOJ — the Anti-Fascist Council for the National Liberation of Yugoslavia — was held. The council was the wartime political body of the Yugoslav Partisan resistance, and its first session in Bihać is regarded as the founding assembly of the new Yugoslavia that emerged from the war. The building that hosted it is now a small museum dedicated to the session and the resistance movement, with documents, photographs and objects from the period. For a visitor interested in the 20th-century history of the region, it is the one site in Bihać that connects the town directly to the wider story of wartime Yugoslavia.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
In November 1942, with Bihać held by the Partisans as the centre of a short-lived liberated territory known as the Bihać Republic, the first session of AVNOJ convened in the town. The council brought together representatives of the resistance from across Yugoslavia and laid the political foundations for the post-war state; a second, more decisive session followed in Jajce a year later. The building in which the Bihać session was held was later turned into a museum commemorating the event, with displays on the session, the Bihać Republic and the wider Partisan movement in the region. It remains a protected memorial site.

WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
The AVNOJ Museum is the one site in Bihać that ties the town to the larger 20th-century history of Yugoslavia. The first AVNOJ session, held here in 1942, was a founding moment of the wartime resistance state, and the museum is the place where that event is preserved and explained. For a visitor it adds the modern historical layer to a town otherwise known for its medieval and Ottoman past, and it pairs naturally with the AVNOJ heritage at Jajce.
