ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

Ostrožac Castle stands in the Una valley near Cazin, about twenty kilometres northwest of Bihać, and it is one of the most distinctive castles of the Krajina. It has medieval origins as a fortified stronghold on the road along the Una, but its present form is largely the work of the 19th and early 20th centuries, when the old fortification was extended into a romantic country house with towers, battlements and gardens. The result is a layered complex — a medieval old core inside a later castle — set on a rise above the river, with a park of trees and stone. For a visitor it is the one castle in the Una valley that shows the medieval and the Austro-Hungarian-period layers of the region together, and a natural excursion from Bihać on a loop through the Krajina.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

Ostrožac began as a medieval fortified stronghold guarding the route along the Una valley, one of the defensive points of the Krajina frontier. Under Ottoman rule the fort was maintained and used, and in the 19th century it passed into the hands of the local Lothar von Berks family, who rebuilt and extended the old fortification into a romantic castle in the spirit of the period, adding towers, battlements, residential wings and a landscaped park. The work continued into the early 20th century, giving the castle its present silhouette. In the Yugoslav period the castle was used for various public purposes and later fell into partial decline; it has since been partly restored and is today a protected cultural monument, with the old towers, the residential wings and the park open to visitors.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

Ostrožac is the one castle in the Una valley that shows the medieval and the Austro-Hungarian-period layers of the Krajina together. The Krajina is rich in medieval fortresses but poor in later country houses, and Ostrožac is the rare site where both survive in one complex. For a visitor it is the natural castle excursion from Bihać, and the place that rounds out the Una valley’s heritage beyond the river and the national park.
