ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

The Captain’s Tower — Kapetanova Kula — is the medieval stone tower that stands in the old core of Bihać, the most prominent surviving piece of the town’s former fortifications. It was built to command the crossing of the Una and the approach to the settlement, and it remained a military and administrative building through the Ottoman and later periods. Today the tower houses the Bihać city museum (Muzej Pounja), whose collections cover the history of the town and the wider Una valley — from medieval finds to the more recent past. For a visitor it is both a piece of Bihać’s medieval fabric and the place to see that history interpreted inside the building that made it.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

Bihać was founded as a fortified royal free town in the medieval period, and the Captain’s Tower is part of the defensive system that protected it on the frontier between the Hungarian crown and the Ottoman state. The tower takes its name from the Ottoman era, when the captain (kapetan) — the local military commander — was based there; under Ottoman rule it remained the seat of the town’s garrison and administration. The building continued in military and official use under Austro-Hungarian and Yugoslav rule. In the modern period it was restored and given to the city museum, whose displays now occupy the tower and tell the story of Bihać and the Una valley.

WHAT TO SEE

What to see here

01

The tower itself — a solid medieval stone keep, the clearest surviving piece of Bihać’s old fortifications; walk around it to read its defensive form.

02

The museum collections — displays inside the tower covering the history of Bihać and the Una valley, from medieval and Ottoman material to the more recent past.

03

The view from the tower — the upper levels give a sense of how the tower commanded the old town and the river crossing below.

04

The old-town setting — the tower stands among the historic streets a short walk from Fethija Mosque and the Una, the natural anchor of a circuit of the centre.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

The Captain’s Tower is the one building in Bihać that puts the town’s medieval and frontier past directly in front of you. Where Fethija shows the religious layering of the city, the tower shows its military one — the reason Bihać exists where it does, on a defended crossing of the Una. As the home of the city museum it is also the place where that history is explained, which makes it the natural starting point for a visit.
