ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE

Grado is the camping capital of the northern Adriatic: a string of big, green, sea-adjacent villages — Club del Sole’s Tenuta Primero (4-star, its own marina and an 18-hole golf course next door), Marina Julia (the family classic with pools and a private train to the beach) and Belvedere Pineta (the quiet one in the pines) — all stitched to town and to the Aquileia ruins by dead-flat cycle paths. Few heritage sites anywhere can be reached by bike from your tent in twenty minutes; here the Roman city and the beach holiday share one holiday.

WHAT YOU’LL EXPERIENCE

What you’ll experience

You pick your village by mood: Primero for the resort polish and the marina mornings, Marina Julia for the kids’ club energy, Belvedere for pines and quiet. Mornings you ride the flat cycle path past the lagoon to Aquileia’s basilica mosaics — 40 minutes, nearly traffic-free — and afternoons you are back on the beach or by the pool. Evenings, the campsites’ pizzerias and the town’s seafront are both in easy reach.

Good to know before you go

Book months ahead for July–August; in May, June and September you can often roll in. Bikes rent at all three sites; Aquileia is a flat 7–8 km ride.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

This is the best-serviced camping coastline in northern Italy — and the only one where the daily sightseeing is a UNESCO Roman city reached by bike through a lagoon.
