ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE
The wall climb is the single most memorable thing to do in Kotor. From behind the old town, a stairway of roughly 1,350 stone steps switchbacks up the cliff face, following the line of the Venetian ramparts to the fortress of San Giovanni at the top. It is a steep, exposed ascent — close to 260 metres of height gain — but it needs no special skill, only steady shoes, water and an early start. The reward is the view that defines a visit to Kotor: the walled town laid out below, the bay winding between the mountains, and the limestone peaks closing the horizon. Halfway up, the little Church of Our Lady of Remedy offers a resting point and a viewpoint in its own right.
WHAT YOU’LL EXPERIENCE
What you’ll experience
You enter the maintained section of the walls near the River Gate, pay the entry fee at the base, and begin the climb. The first stretch is the steepest, winding up to the 15th-century Church of Our Lady of Remedy (Gospa od Zdravlja) about halfway — a natural place to pause and look back over the rooftops. From there the steps continue to switchback up the cliff to the fortress platform at San Giovanni, where the panorama opens out over the old town, the inner bay and the mountains. Most people take 40 to 90 minutes to reach the top, spend time at the summit, and descend by the same route. The stone is worn smooth and slippery, the route is exposed to the sun, and there are long drops to the side in places — the experience is rewarding but demands care and reasonable fitness.

HIGHLIGHTS
Moments worth savouring
Roughly 1,350 stone steps climbing the cliff to San Giovanni fortress, about 260 m above the bay.
The Church of Our Lady of Remedy halfway up — a 15th-century chapel and a resting viewpoint over the rooftops.
The classic panorama at the summit — the walled old town, the winding bay and the surrounding peaks in one view.
A walk along the most ambitious single piece of Venetian fortification on the eastern Adriatic — walls built to climb a mountain.
Best done in the cool of early morning, before the cruise-ship crowds and the midday heat.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Good to know before you go
The climb is open during daylight hours and an entry fee is charged for the maintained section. There is no shade on the upper route, so in summer the heat is the main difficulty — start at or near sunrise. The steps are uneven and worn; shoes with grip are essential and sandals are a common cause of falls. Carry water, as there is no reliable supply on the route. The descent uses the same steps and is hard on the knees; take it slowly. On days when cruise ships are in port the lower section is busy, but the crowd thins higher up. The view from the top is the same in any season, but clear, cool mornings give the sharpest light over the bay.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
Kotor’s walls do not stop at the town but climb the cliff above it, so the wall climb is not just a viewpoint hike — it is a walk along the very structure that makes Kotor unlike any other walled town on the Adriatic. Standing on the ramparts as they rise up the mountainside is the moment the town’s relationship to its setting becomes clear, and the panorama at the top is the image most visitors carry away. It is the one experience that ties the old town, the bay and the mountains into a single picture.
