ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE

The climb to the fortress is the single most rewarding part of a visit to Počitelj. The route threads the steep stone lanes and stairs of the village up the hillside to the Kula tower on the summit, and from the top the whole amphitheatre of stone houses opens out below, with the Neretva plain and the road beyond. The ascent is short but steep, on uneven stone steps that are exposed to the sun, and the view from the tower is the panorama that frames the village. Take it slowly, wear shoes with grip, and plan it for the cooler hours of the day.

HIGHLIGHTS

Moments worth savouring

01

The stone lanes and stairs — the steep climb through the houses that is the route to the top.

02

The Kula tower — the cylindrical tower at the summit, the goal of the climb.

03

The panorama over the village — the top-down view of the stone amphitheatre from above.

04

The Neretva plain — the river and the road below, the crossing the fortress was built to command.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Good to know before you go

A short but steep climb on uneven stone steps, with little shade and some exposure on the upper slopes. The tower and the summit give the finest view over the village and the river plain. The footing demands shoes with grip, especially when the stone is damp; allow time to pause on the way up rather than rushing.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

The climb is the way to understand Počitelj as a fortified landscape rather than only a pretty village — the fortress above and the crossing below read together from the Kula. For a visitor the panorama from the tower is the image that frames the whole visit.
