ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE

The ascent to Trsat is the essential Rijeka walk — either the 561 steps of the Trsat stairway from the river, or a bus or taxi to the hilltop — ending at the castle ramparts with the whole of the city and the gulf spread below. The shrine and the monastery sit beside the castle, so the visit is both a viewpoint and a quiet half-hour in the pilgrimage complex.

WHAT YOU’LL EXPERIENCE

What you’ll experience

You ascend the long stairway from the Rječina river (or ride up) and emerge at the castle and the shrine on the hilltop. From the ramparts the port, the Korzo and the gulf toward Krk and Cres are all in view. The Franciscan monastery and the shrine of Our Lady of Trsat are open beside the castle, and the descent can be made by the same steps or by bus.

The stairway is steep and takes 15–20 minutes at a steady pace; wear comfortable shoes. The castle grounds are free; the shrine has its own hours. In summer go early or late to avoid the heat.
