ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Ada Bojana is the river-created island at the mouth of the Bojana, where the river splits around a long spit of sand before meeting the Adriatic at the southernmost reach of the Montenegrin coast. It is a flat landscape of sand, channels and reed beds, with a long sandy beach on the sea side and the slower river on the other, lined with the stilted fish restaurants that are the island’s signature. Where Velika Plaža is an open beach, Ada Bojana is a delta — a place shaped by water, where the river, the sea and the sand meet, and where the day is organised around the river restaurants, the beach and the wind. It is a destination in its own right at the end of the coast road south from Ulcinj, and it has a slower, end-of-the-road character than the town beaches.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
Ada Bojana was formed by the Bojana river, which splits around the island’s sand before reaching the sea — a delta landscape built by sediment and shaped by the river and the tides. The story told locally is that the island grew around a ship that ran aground in the 19th century, around which the river deposited sand, though the delta’s formation is more gradual and ongoing than that single event suggests. In the modern era the island became known for its stilted river restaurants serving fish from the Bojana, its long sandy beach, and — on part of the island — a designated naturist zone. Access, roads, bridges, restaurants, beach services, boat operation and water conditions all vary seasonally, and the delta landscape continues to shift with the river.
WHAT TO SEE
What to see here
The river-created island and delta landscape — the flat spit of sand where the Bojana splits before meeting the sea, with channels and reed beds.
The long sandy coast on the sea side — a wide, open beach at the southernmost reach of the Montenegrin coast.
The stilted river restaurants — the fish restaurants on the Bojana, reached by boat or bridge, the island’s signature experience.
The river and the delta channels — the slower Bojana on the landward side, with boat trips and the shifting channels of the delta.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
Ada Bojana is the place where the Montenegrin coast ends — a river delta of sand, channels and fish restaurants at the mouth of the Bojana, with a character entirely its own. For a visitor it is the slowest, most end-of-the-road stop on the southern coast, the natural counterpoint to the fortress old town, and the best place to spend a long afternoon on the river and the beach. But everything about a visit is seasonal and conditional, and parts of the island are designated naturist zones that must be respected.
