ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

Velika Plaža — the “Great Beach” — is the long, open sandy coast that runs south from Ulcinj toward the Bojana river and the Albanian border, the longest continuous stretch of sand on the Montenegrin coast. Unlike the small coves of the Budva coast, it is a wide, flat beach backed by dunes and the river estuary, with a shallow, gently shelving sea. Its scale means that even in high summer there is room, and its steady thermal winds make the southern end a major kitesurfing and windsurfing spot. The beach is not a single managed strip but a sequence of seasonal zones — busy northern stretches near town, long empty middle sections, and the kitesurfing and delta areas toward the south — and the dunes behind the sand give it a wilder, less developed character than the resort coves to the north.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

Velika Plaža is a natural feature of the southern Montenegrin coast, shaped by the longshore drift of sand and the shallow shelving of the Adriatic at the mouth of the Bojana river. Unlike the walled towns of the coast, it was never a settlement but a open stretch of dune-backed sand used by the town of Ulcinj for grazing, fishing and salt-pan access, and in the modern era for beach tourism. Its steady afternoon thermal winds made it a recognised kitesurfing and windsurfing location, and seasonal beach bars, sun loungers and kite schools now operate at intervals along the sand in the warmer months, with long empty stretches between them. The dune and estuary landscape behind the beach remains largely undeveloped.

WHAT TO SEE

What to see here

01

The long open sandy coast — a wide, flat beach of pale sand backed by dunes, the longest continuous stretch of sand on the Montenegrin coast.

02

The dune landscape behind the sand — a wilder, less developed coast than the Budva coves, with the river estuary toward the southern end.

03

The shallow, gently shelving sea — warm and gentle in normal conditions, good for swimming and families, though water depth, calm and safety are not guaranteed.

04

The seasonal beach zones — busy northern stretches near Ulcinj, long empty middle sections, and the kitesurfing and water-sport areas toward the south.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

Velika Plaža is the counterpoint to the small, crowded coves of the central Montenegrin coast — a genuinely vast sandy beach with room to breathe, and the place that gives Ulcinj its character as a beach destination rather than only a fortress town. For a visitor it is the best place on the Montenegrin coast for a long beach walk, a shallow swim, or a kitesurfing day, and it shows a wilder, less developed side of the coast than Budva or Kotor. Its scale and its separation of swimming and water-sport zones are what make it work.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Before you go

Access
The beach is public and free to walk. The northern end is closest to Ulcinj; the southern end is toward Ada Bojana. Transport runs from Ulcinj to the beach in season, or it is a short drive — do not assume fixed schedules.
Zones
Swimming zones, kitesurfing areas and other water-sport zones are separated along the beach. Visitors must obey beach flags, operator boundaries and current weather or water conditions, and keep swimmers out of marked kite zones.
Facilities
Beach bars, sun loungers and kitesurfing schools operate at intervals in season, with long empty stretches between. Little natural shade — bring sun protection and water.
Water
The sea is shallow and gently shelving in normal conditions, but exact depth, calm water, currents and lifeguard coverage are not guaranteed — obey beach flags and do not swim when the red flag is flying.
Context
The beach runs south from Ulcinj toward the Bojana river and the Albanian border; the southern end is the kitesurfing centre, the northern end near town is the busiest.
