ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Valdanos is the sheltered bay northwest of Ulcinj, a curve of pebble beach and clear water set among the olive groves that climb the slopes behind it. Where the southern coast is flat, sandy and open, Valdanos is green and enclosed — a bay backed by one of the oldest olive landscapes on the coast, with groves of old trees terraced up the hillsides above the beach. It is the natural counterpoint to Velika Plaža: smaller, quieter and greener, reached by a separate road to the northwest rather than the coast road south. The bay is a place to swim, to walk among the olives, and to see the older, cultivated landscape of the Ulcinj coast, but much of that landscape is private and working, and a visit depends on current access, parking and conditions.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
Valdanos and its surroundings have been an olive-growing landscape for centuries, with groves of old trees terraced on the slopes above the bay — a cultivated coast rather than a resort one. The bay itself is a natural feature, a sheltered curve of pebble beach and clear water that has served the town and the surrounding farms as a bathing and fishing place. In the modern era a road reached the bay from Ulcinj, and small seasonal facilities appeared at the shore, but the olive groves behind remain largely private and working plots rather than a public park. The age of individual trees is a matter of local tradition rather than verified record, and the landscape as a whole is a living, cultivated one rather than a preserved monument.
WHAT TO SEE
What to see here
The sheltered bay — a curve of pebble beach and clear water northwest of Ulcinj, quieter and greener than the southern sands.
The ancient olive groves — the centuries-old olive trees terraced on the slopes above the bay, a cultivated landscape rather than a resort one.
The pebble beach and clear water — a smaller, more enclosed swimming spot than Velika Plaža, conditional on current access and conditions.
The cultivated landscape — the working olive plots and terraces behind the bay, the older, farmed coast of the Ulcinj region.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
Valdanos is the green counterpoint to the long sands of the south — a sheltered bay set among centuries-old olive groves, showing the older, cultivated coast of the Ulcinj region rather than its beach-resort side. For a visitor it is the quieter, more enclosed alternative to Velika Plaža, and the best place to see the olive landscape that defines this part of the coast. But it lies in the opposite direction from the southern beach and delta sequence, and much of its landscape is private or working.
