ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE
This is the walk that gathers Ulcinj’s old town, waterfront and Sailors’ Mosque into a single route on foot, tracing the line from the fortress headland down to the water’s edge. It begins in the old town on its rocky headland — the walls, the Balšić Tower, the Pasha’s Mosque and the slave-market square — and descends to the harbour at the foot of the headland, where the working waterfront and the fish restaurants meet the small curve of Mala Plaža. The Sailors’ Mosque stands above the beach, the natural link between the headland above and the coast below, and a working mosque that frames the walk with the call to prayer. Where the old town is the historic, defensive Ulcinj, the waterfront and the mosque are the maritime, religious Ulcinj, and the walk is the way to read both in a single morning without needing transport.
WHAT YOU’LL EXPERIENCE
What you’ll experience
You climb into the old town while it is still cool and quiet, wandering the steep lanes, the walls and the Pasha’s Mosque, with the view south over Velika Plaža opening from the headland. From the walls you descend to the harbour at the foot of the headland — the working waterfront with its fish restaurants — and walk the short stretch to Mala Plaža, Ulcinj’s compact town beach, and the Sailors’ Mosque above it. The mosque is an active place of worship, so the visit depends on the rhythm of prayer: you approach with respect, dress modestly and step back during worship. The whole route is on foot and within the compact old town and its waterfront, with no transport needed — the only difficulty is the steep stone lanes and the heat.

HIGHLIGHTS
Moments worth savouring
The old town on its headland — the walls, the Balšić Tower, the Pasha’s Mosque and the slave-market square, the historic, defensive Ulcinj.
The harbour and working waterfront — the fish restaurants and the port at the foot of the headland, the maritime Ulcinj below the walls.
Mala Plaža — Ulcinj’s compact town beach, the small sandy curve closest to the old town.
The Sailors’ Mosque — an active Sunni mosque and waterfront landmark above Mala Plaža, the link between the headland and the coast.
The view south over Velika Plaža — the long sands stretching from the headland toward the Albanian border, seen from the walls.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Good to know before you go
The walk is on foot through the old town and along the waterfront, with no transport needed. The old town’s lanes are steep, stepped and paved in worn stone that becomes very slippery when wet, so shoes with grip are essential; in summer the lanes are hot and crowded by mid-morning, which is why an early start matters. The Sailors’ Mosque is an active place of worship — dress modestly with shoulders, arms and knees covered, remove shoes where required, keep voices low, and step back during prayer and the call to prayer. Interior access, opening hours and photography are never guaranteed and are at the discretion of the community; do not assume access. Mala Plaža is a compact town beach; swimming safety, facilities and water conditions are not guaranteed. Carry water and sun protection for the heat and exposure of the headland.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
This walk matters because it gathers the defensive, maritime and religious threads of Ulcinj into a single route on foot, where most visitors otherwise meet them only as scattered sights. The old town, the harbour and the Sailors’ Mosque are the three points that define Ulcinj’s character — the fortress, the port and the mosque — and walking them is the way to read the town’s relationship to its sea setting and its Muslim-Albanian identity. For a visitor who has only a morning, it is the most complete single reading of the town.
