ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE
The Independence Monument stands in the Flag Square (Sheshi i Flamurit) on the Vlorë waterfront, the symbolic birthplace of the modern Albanian state. On 28 November 1912, at the end of the First Balkan War, the Assembly of Vlorë convened here and Ismail Qemali raised the flag over the city, ending nearly five centuries of Ottoman rule. The monument — the flag-bearer figure group raised above the square — anchors the city’s seafront and its sense of national identity.
