ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Berat Castle is less a monument than a village with walls: some twenty families still live inside the 13th-century enceinte, which stands on Illyrian foundations and rebuildings by Byzantines, Bulgars and Ottomans. Within the gates are more than a dozen churches, several mosques, the ruins of the white cathedral and the Onufri museum in the church of St Mary — home of the 16th-century master’s icons and his unreproduced secret pink. The rampart walk over the Osum valley is Berat’s finest hour, and the view down onto the tiered white houses is the photograph that made the town famous.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The hill has been fortified since the Illyrian Antipatrea; Rome took it by siege in 200 BC, and the Byzantine garrison held it against Slav and Bulgar attacks — the 9th-century Bulgar capture by trickery is one of the chronicles’ best stories. The castle’s present outline is largely the 13th-century Despotate of Epirus work, re-fortified by the Ottomans after 1450. Its churches kept wall paintings and icons through the Ottoman centuries, and the Communist museum era preserved the Onufri collection; UNESCO inscribed the castle and historic centre in 2008.
