ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE

Butrint’s walls survive at their gates. The Lion’s Gate — deliberately narrowed for defence — carries the famous relief of a lion devouring a bull, a carving centuries older than the wall it was set into; inside it, the 2nd-century Spring of the Nymphs still holds water. At the water’s edge the Lake Gate opened the city to lagoon trade; it stood in use, barely altered, from the 4th or 5th century for a thousand years — the quietest and oldest-feeling corners of the park.
