ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE

Butrint’s Christian centuries left the site’s two most remarkable buildings side by side: the Great Basilica — a 6th-century church among the best preserved in the Mediterranean, its triple-window apse still rising to full height — and the baptistery beside it, one of the very few circular early-Christian baptisteries anywhere, its floor a maze of peacock, fish and vine mosaics kept under cover to protect them from the lagoon’s floods, revealed only occasionally for study and viewing.
