ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Every Serbian schoolchild knows the name: Pančićev vrh is the roof of the country. The summit stands on the shoulder of Suvo Rudište at the heart of the massif, reached on foot from the Konaci complex or carried up by the Pančić gondola. A memorial has crowned the peak since 1897; the current stone mausoleum (rebuilt after the 1999 bombing) holds the remains of Josif Pančić, the botanist who put Serbian nature science on its feet and chose this summit for his grave. The panorama runs full circle — Šar Planina south, the Carpathian wall east, Durmitor and Sinjajevina in Montenegro on the clearest days.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
Josif Pančić (1814–1888), the first president of the Serbian Royal Academy and the great explorer of the Serbian mountains, studied Kopaonik in 1851 and named its highest summit Milanov vrh after his patron; the peak was renamed for Pančić himself after his death. He asked to rest on the summit, and a first memorial rose in 1897. The mausoleum was rebuilt in stone in the 1950s, damaged in the 1999 NATO strikes, and restored again — today the summit is both a national shrine and the busiest viewpoint in the park, with the ski school’s beginner runs on its shoulder below.
