ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Kopaonik is the largest ski resort between the Alps and the Balkan range: 55 kilometres of alpine runs (17 blue, 9 red, 7 black), 12 kilometres of cross-country trails, and 25 lifts carrying 33,000 skiers an hour from the valley at Brzeće to the summit. The terrain runs from the wide beginner meadows of Sunčna Dolina to the black walls of Gvozdac and Duboka 1 — 395 vertical metres of sustained steep — and the season runs on average 160 snow days, December into April, backed by snow-making on 70% of the area. Night skiing on the Malo jezero slope, a terrain park and the ski kindergarten make it the region’s full-service winter town.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
Skiing came to Kopaonik between the wars with the mountain lodges of the Serbian mountaineering society; the first drag lift rose in 1966 and the resort grew through the 1980s into the country’s winter capital, hosting World Cup slaloms and the masses of the Yugoslav ski boom. The 2000s brought the snow-making system, the Brzeće gondola and a decade of expansion; by 2025 the resort counted 25 lifts and 55 km of slopes — and the new lifts now rising (a sixth Pančić chair, rebuilt Sunčna Dolina) are adding another 20 kilometres of refreshed skiing.
