ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

Above the ski slopes the mountain turns wild. Suvo Rudište — “the bare ore-mining place” — is the broad plateau and ridge that carries Kopaonik’s highest ground, its slopes carved into gullies and bare “stone seas” by ice and water, its north faces held by the park’s strictest reserve: subalpine spruce, low juniper and blueberry thickets from 1,650 m to the summit. The walk from the Pančić gondola across the plateau is the mountain’s best half-day hike — silent, treeless and full of view.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

The name remembers medieval ore-digging — “rudište” is an ore vein — and the plateau’s bare slopes are the mountain’s oldest worked landscape: miners of the Gvozdac era dug and smelted here from the 14th century. The strict reserve was protected with the park in 1981; its subalpine spruce community (Piceetum abietis subalpinum) is one of the reference stands of Serbian vegetation science, first described from these slopes.
