ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Baška is the main beach resort of Krk, set at the head of a long curved pebble beach (Vela Plaža) on the island’s southeast coast, ringed by the bare karst hills that give the area its dramatic setting. The beach is the longest on the island and the reason most summer visitors come, and the village itself holds the Baška Tablet — a key monument of the Croatian language found here in the 19th century.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
Baška was a Glagolitic village whose church held the Baška Tablet, an 11th-century stone inscription in Croatian Glagolitic script that is one of the most important monuments of the Croatian language. The tablet is now in Zagreb, with a copy in the village church. Baška’s modern life is as a beach resort, built around the long pebble beach that opens to the southeast and catches the sun all day.

WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
Baška is the swimming face of Krk — the long beach that balances the history of Krk town and the wine of Vrbnik — and the place that connects the island to the deepest layer of Croatian language. For a visitor it is the beach day of an island circuit.
