ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Trsat Castle sits on the hill above the Rječina river gorge, the oldest fortification in the Rijeka area and the city’s great viewpoint. A medieval fortress of the Frankopan family, it looks out over the whole of Rijeka, the harbour and the Kvarner Gulf toward the islands. Beside it stands the Franciscan monastery and the shrine of Our Lady of Trsat, one of the oldest Marian pilgrimage sites in Croatia, so the hill is both a castle and a place of pilgrimage.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
A fort has stood on Trsat hill since Roman times, controlling the road inland from the gulf. The present castle was held by the Frankopan princes of Krk in the medieval period and later by the Habsburgs. The Franciscan monastery and the shrine of Our Lady of Trsat were founded in the 15th century on the tradition that the Holy House of Nazareth rested here on its way to Loreto, making Trsat a pilgrimage destination that still draws visitors today.
