ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

Durmitor National Park is the protected heart of the Durmitor massif in northern Montenegro — a limestone block of 48 peaks above 2,000 metres, 18 glacial lakes known as the “mountain eyes”, dense black-pine forests and high karst plateaus, all carved by ice during the last ice age. Its highest peak, Bobotov Kuk, rises to 2,523 m, and the massif is cut by the Tara canyon on its northern edge. The park was established in 1952 and inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1980, and it is the centre of Montenegrin mountain hiking, with Žabljak as its gateway town on the plateau above.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

Durmitor’s landscape was carved by glaciers during the last ice age, which scoured the limestone into a massif of peaks, cirques and glacial lakes. The area was used for summer grazing (katuni) and forestry for centuries before it was protected. Durmitor National Park was established in 1952 to preserve the massif’s geology, lakes and forests, and in 1980 it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List for its dramatic glacial scenery and the Tara canyon. The park remains the focus of Montenegrin mountain tourism, with hiking, winter sports and canyon rafting based around Žabljak.

WHAT TO SEE

What to see here

01

The 48 peaks above 2,000 m — the highest, Bobotov Kuk (2,523 m), is the classic summit hike of Montenegro.

02

The 18 glacial lakes (“mountain eyes”) — Black Lake is the largest and most accessible; others, such as Zminje and Barno, lie higher in the massif.

03

The high karst plateaus — Jezerska Površ and Sljeme, wide stone uplands above the treeline crossed by hiking routes.

04

The black-pine forests — old-growth pine on the lower slopes, some of the trees centuries old.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

Durmitor is the mountain heart of Montenegro — the place where the country’s high-alpine scenery, its glacial lakes and its deepest canyon come together in one protected massif. For a visitor it is the destination for serious hiking in Montenegro, with everything from an easy lake loop to a full ascent of Bobotov Kuk, and its UNESCO listing recognises a landscape that is rare in southern Europe.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Before you go

Access
The park is reached from Žabljak, the gateway town on the plateau. Trails start from the town and from the Black Lake area; a small national-park entry fee may apply in season.
When
June to September for hiking, when the high trails are clear of snow; January to March for winter sports. Outside summer the high peaks may still hold snow.
Preparation
High trails are exposed and weather can change quickly — carry water, warm layers and a map, and start early. The Bobotov Kuk ascent is a long day hike requiring fitness.
Context
Durmitor National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site; Žabljak is the gateway town at about 1,456 m.
