ABOUT THIS ROUTE

The route in detail

Program H focuses on the Upper Lakes — the twelve higher lakes spread across a wider, more forested valley than the canyon below. Where the Lower Lakes are narrow and vertical, the Upper Lakes are a sequence of broad travertine terraces stepping down through beech and fir forest, with long cascading barriers rather than vertical drops. Being further from both entrances, they hold the quietest stretches of boardwalk in the park. The route starts from Entrance 2, crosses Kozjak by electric boat to reach the upper trailheads, walks the terraces, and returns by boat and train. The distance and time below are typical; confirm the day’s boat and train timetable at the entrance.

PLAN RESPONSIBLY

Season & safety

Seasonal conditions

Operates according to current Upper Lakes access and park transport schedules; confirm conditions before departure.

  • Longer walking time and transport delays can lead to a later-than-planned finish.

  • Waterproof clothing and an additional layer for cooler forest conditions.
  • Drinking water, food, sun protection and insect protection as seasonally appropriate.
  • Charged phone and the current official park map.

Check before you go

  • Check whether the Upper Lakes and Program H are currently open.
  • Confirm the current electric-boat and panoramic-vehicle schedules.
  • Check the forecast and allow sufficient time for the complete program.
  • Confirm the starting entrance and return connection before beginning.

Local guidance

Follow the official marked program and do not enter closed boardwalks or forest paths. Transport availability and route access can change, so follow current park signage and staff instructions rather than relying only on a previously saved itinerary.
