ROUTE
Germany’s oldest themed route — from the Würzburg Residence through Rothenburg’s walls and Augsburg’s Renaissance core to the royal castles at Füssen.
ABOUT THIS ROUTE
The Romantische Straße (350 km) is the route that made Bavarian touring famous: the Würzburg Residence, the Tauber valley’s Rothenburg, the walled towns of Dinkelsbühl and Nördlingen, Augsburg’s Fugger quarter and the Lech gorge ending under Neuschwanstein. Ride it by car in three days, by bike on the parallel cycle route in five to six — the waymarks run the whole way, and every stop connects a UNESCO site, a walled medieval town or a royal palace. The train shortcut: Würzburg–Rothenburg and Augsburg–Füssen both ride direct.
