ABOUT THIS ROUTE

The route in detail

The Via Francigena, the archbishop Sigeric’s route from Canterbury to Rome, crosses the Alps at the Great St Bernard pass and descends the Aosta valley — and its Italian opening stages are among the most Roman kilometres of the whole route. The classic three days run from the pass hospice down through Saint-Rhémy to Aosta (the theatre, the Porta Praetoria, the Sant’Orso cloister), then on past the Sarriod de la Tour and Fénis castles toward Châtillon. Marked GR-style paths mix with the valley road; pilgrim stamps are available at the Aosta cathedral.
