ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Mount Dajti is the capital’s backyard mountain — 1,613 metres of beech and pine rising straight from the plain, protected as a national park since 1966. The Dajti Ekspres cable car climbs its flank in a quarter-hour (the longest in the Balkans when built), delivering you to a restaurant complex with a free balloon ride, paragliding take-offs and trailheads into the forest. Walk 40 minutes past the ski-lift remnants to the open summit meadows, and Tirana spreads out the whole way below you — the Adriatic glinting on clear days.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
Dajti’s slopes carried Hoxha’s ski lifts for the elite (the ruined pomas are still visible on the walk up) and the hillside is dotted with the regime’s bunkers — the Faku Bunker café is one, fitted inside a pillbox. The national park (1966, 29,000 ha with its extension) protects wolves, brown bears and the endemic Dajti meadow flora; the Austrian-built cable car opened in 2005 and made the mountain the city’s weekend escape.
