ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Skanderbeg Square is the city’s everything: the equestrian national hero at its centre, the 1789 Et’hem Bey mosque and 1822 clock tower at its corner, the Opera, the National Museum — whose façade mural spells the country’s history — and the Italian-era ministries in a ring. Redesigned in 2017 by the 51N4E studio into a gently sloping granite mosaic planted with trees from Albania’s counties, it is now car-free and civic: skateboarders at dusk, the fountains’ evening show, the city’s whole life crossing it.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The square grew around the old Sulejman Pasha mosque site when Tirana became capital in 1920; the Italians (1930s) laid out the rationalist ensemble, and the Communist regime ringed it with the Opera, the museum and the Hotel Dajti. The equestrian Skanderbeg statue (1968, for the hero’s 500th) replaced an older monument; the 2017 redesign — granite from every Albanian quarry, 12 new fountains, hundreds of trees — turned a traffic circle into the country’s living room. The mosque survived the 1967 atheist campaign by being made a monument; the tower survived earthquakes.

GOOD TO KNOW
Facts & Curiosities
The 2017 redesign uses granite from quarries across Albania — the country’s geology as paving.
The Et’hem Bey mosque (1789–1823) kept its frescoes through the atheist campaign as a protected monument.
The National History Museum’s façade carries a giant mural of Illyrian to Communist heroes.
The square is car-free — one of the largest pedestrianised central squares in the Balkans.
