ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Petrelë is the capital’s easy castle day: a compact triangular fortress on a rock above the village, 12 km from Tirana’s centre, built under Justinian in the 6th century to watch the roads from the north, rebuilt in the 15th by the Thopia lords — and commanded during Skanderbeg’s wars by his sister Mamica Kastrioti. The castle was one spoke of Krujë’s fire-signal defence network; today its wooden restaurant hangs in the walls over olive groves, and the view runs the whole Erzen valley.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
Procopius records a Justinian-era fort at Petrelë (6th century) guarding the north–south road; Anna Comnene names “Petrula” in the Norman wars of 1081. The Thopia family rebuilt it into its present shape; Skanderbeg took it in 1443 right after Krujë — it controlled the Ottomans’ main southern approach — and his sister Mamica held it as her seat after marrying Muzakë Thopia. Under the Ottomans it declined to a garrison post; restorations in the 16th and later centuries kept the walls standing, and the castle-restaurant opened to visitors in the 2000s.
