ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
The Blagaj tekija is the cultural heart of the site, a Dervish monastery built into the cliff at the mouth of the Buna spring. It was established around 1520, in the early Ottoman period, and it combines Ottoman architectural elements with Mediterranean ones in a way that reflects the meeting of inland and coastal traditions in Herzegovina. The building sits at the base of the sheer limestone cliff, beside the spring, its stone walls, wooden galleries and turba (the burial chamber of Sari Saltuk, to whom the tekija is traditionally connected) set against the rock. It remains an active place of worship and pilgrimage, and it is one of the most photographed sights in the country. The natural and architectural ensemble of the tekija, the spring and the cliff is on the UNESCO Tentative List.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The tekija was established around 1520, in the early decades of Ottoman rule in Herzegovina, as a Sufi sanctuary at the Buna spring. Its architecture combines Ottoman elements — the stone walls, the wooden interior galleries — with Mediterranean ones, reflecting the cultural crossing of inland Herzegovina and the Adriatic coast. The tekija is traditionally connected to Sari Saltuk, a figure of Sufi legend, whose turba (burial chamber) stands within the complex. The building was damaged and restored over the centuries, and it remains in religious use. The ensemble of the tekija, the spring and the cliff is on the UNESCO Tentative List.

WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
The tekija is the cultural and spiritual centre of Blagaj and the sight that gives the site its iconic image — the monastery against the cliff above the spring. For a visitor it is the building that connects the natural drama of the Buna to the Ottoman layer of Herzegovina.
