ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

The Buna spring, Vrelo Bune, is the natural fact that fixes Blagaj in its place: a major karst spring where the Buna river emerges in full flow from a cavern at the base of a sheer limestone cliff. The sight of a substantial river appearing at once from the rock, beneath the overhang of the cliff and beside the tekija, is the reason the site became a place of settlement and of worship. The spring is the source of the Buna, a short but powerful river that runs from here to the Neretva, and its volume is striking at any time of year, fullest in spring after snowmelt and rain. The spring is viewed from the riverbank beside the tekija and from the path along the Buna.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

The Buna spring is a karst resurgence, the point where water collected in the limestone uplands behind Blagaj re-emerges at the surface as a full river. Such powerful karst springs are characteristic of the Herzegovinian Dinaric landscape, where rivers run underground through the limestone and resurface at the base of cliffs. The spring has made Blagaj a destination since long before the tekija or the fortress stood, and it is the natural element around which the cultural ensemble grew. The natural and architectural ensemble of the spring, the cliff and the tekija is on the UNESCO Tentative List.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

The spring is the reason Blagaj exists — the natural fact that drew settlement and worship to the foot of the cliff. For a visitor it is the first and the most elemental of the sights, the one that makes sense of the tekija and the fortress above.
