Seasonal conditions
May–October (closed in winter — snowed under).
ROUTE
Austria’s gentlest high road — 35 kilometres through the Nockberge biosphere’s soft granite domes, with the summit trails rising from its lay-bys.
ABOUT THIS ROUTE
The Nockalmstraße is the odd one among Alpine roads: no hairpin theatre, no pass to conquer — just 35 kilometres of easy sweep through the Nockberge biosphere park, where the mountains are rounded granite domes over 2,000 metres and the trails leave straight from the road’s lay-bys. Stop at the Eisentalhöhe viewpoint for the whole range, walk the Schusterwald stone-pine grove, and finish at Bad Kleinkirchheim, where the Römerbad spa soaks the day out of the legs. Open roughly May to October; closed in winter.
